How long should I keep Records?

I get asked this question all the time.  As a general rule you should keep records for 6 years from the date you filed the return.  For example, if you just filed your 2014 taxes you should keep complete records for 2009 through 2014.

However, there are some records that you need to keep indefinitely.  For example (but definitely not all inclusive), incorporation papers, charitable & political donation receipts, and any appeals letters from CRA.
